A journalist's 50-year career with pen and camera is the topic of a book by Cecil J. Smith that is now available in the gift shop at The Depot railroad museum in Salem.

In early January the book was out of stock, but is once again being sold at The Depot, Leader Publishing Company on Walnut Street in Salem, and at Smith's home, 505 North Water Street, Salem.

Some of the books in the original printing had a problem with pages coming loose. Anyone who has a damaged book, or one of the books sold during December, may return their book for a replacement copy, even if the pages have not pulled out.

"News Beat" is a 222-page soft cover book that contains more than 440 news photos that were taken during Smith's 35-year career as editor of The Salem Leader and Salem Democrat. He joined the local newspapers in 1965 and retired in 2000.

Books are $25 each, which includes state sales tax.

Also, books may be ordered by mail for an extra $5 per book. Send mail orders to News Beat, 505 North Water St., Salem, IN   47167. Cash, check or money order in the amount of $30 per book will be accepted. (Sorry: Credit card payments cannot be accepted).
