Lee Wheeler of New Albany, a rertired car knocker with the Lousiville & Nashville Railroad, is the 2016 "Volunteer of the Year" for the John Hay Center's Depot railroad museum.
In presenting Wheeler with his plaque, The Depot's volunteer stationmaster, Cecil J. Smith, said Wheeler, a 40-year employee with the L&N and its successor railroads, had expressed an interest in becoming a Depot volunteer long before his 2014 retirement as a car inspector.
"The day after he retired, he walked through our front door saying he was ready to go to work," Smith said.
Wheeler is regularly assigned to Wednesday afternoons, assisting in greeting visitors, conducting tours and operating trains on the large model of Washington County.
He also readily volunteers to fill in for any other volunteers who need to be absent, and is on hand for special events, such as Old Settlers' Days and Christmas open house.
The plaque was presented during The Depot's recent volunteer appreciation dinner.
